a disfunction Empty a disfunction

I've noticed that if you don't read all the new posts and then log out or close down, thinking you can read them next time - they all are marked as 'read' when you come back.

Quite annoying since late last night I quickpeaked in, and thinking I could read most and the rest today... and if I wanna do that now, it has to be a manual hunt for the posts.

Could it be done, so whatever new post you haven't read yet, stays as unread until you either read it or mark it yourself as read - no matter how many times you log out.

Hi Lina

Pete (lilaccavies) also had this problem but for some reason it doesn't seem to affect everyone. However it's not really a thing I can control because it is how the software is written.

I've spoken to the hosts and they don't see it as a fault, which is rather annoying. I'm hoping they'll do something soon but they've told me that it is due to session timeout and there is apparently a good reason for it (I don't know what!).

Really sorry about this and i'll keep trying to get something done!

The only way I can see a way around it at the moment is moving hosts which would be a big hassle and would mean everyone would need to rejoin pale

Ben, when you come here and see a new post (when the apple icon turns green) if you close the page and then come back without viewing the post - is it still green? Or does it change back to normal as if you've read it?

It happens to me occasionally, especially if I close the page.

Lina, could you let me know...

What browser are you using and is it the latest version?

After clearing the board cookies and your cache, is the problem fixed?

Lastly have you noticed the problem in the past or is this the first time??

Thanks!

If you don't want to clear all of your cookies there is a link on the main forum index just to clear the cookies set by this forum.

Also did you log out and re-login at all?

Sorry for all the questions lol

I think it might be if you don't have "remember me" ticked when you login - because if you logout and then re-login it will sort of forget all the new posts and assume you've read them. After reading your original post again Lina, I think that is it...when you log out your session is "cleared".

After some experimenting ( Laughing ) i'm not getting the problem either, but I do have remember me ticked so I am always logged in. When I logged out and then logged back in, all of the sections that had new posts weren't showing up green.

I have remember me ticked all the time too, as I have my own laptop so dont have to worry about other people being on my account.

nope, nope and more nope.

I use maxthon2, which updates on it's own.
I am 'remembered' cause I hate to manually log on... but I close tabs and browser.
My cache, cookies and whatnots are cleared automatically by my browser and/or a cleaning program that I always run before closing down my pc.

Normally I do check out the new threads when I peak in... so I can't really say how long this problem has persisted.

However... on the forum that I am a co-admin in, this particular function has to be added, since the default action is marking everything as read. Since that forum is hosted on a private server, our techie just adds whatever we need/want.

My cache, cookies and whatnots are cleared
automatically by my browser and/or a cleaning program that I always run
before closing down my pc.

This would be what is causing the problem. Our forum (and most forums) store a cookie on your computer which stores your username and password. This is so that when you come back here, it already knows this info and you don't have to relogin (if you ticked "remember me").

If the cookies and cache are cleared it simply has to log you out, and thus the remember me option will not work (and in turn will cause the unread posts issue you're getting).

I'm not familiar with the browser you use, but is there an option to clear all cookies except the ones set by this forum? That would solve the issue.

Sorry, but not the case.

I have the option of making a list of cookies that shouldn't be cleared out along with the junk.... and if it was, that would mean my autologin would go byebye as well - which it don't.

I am rather inclined to believe, that for those that can come back and still see the unread threads from last visit, are just loading the page from the cache instead.
IE has a setting on how to react when you go to a website... if it should check if there has been some new action, update or whatever, or if it should just load it from the cache. Mine is always set to check for new, so it won't load from the cache.

I'm really not sure then...

I use firefox with default settings and this doesn't happen to me?
